Here’s a fun fact about me. I used to play ultimate frisbee. And “play” might be an understatement. I was introduced to the game at summer camp, senior year of high school I started playing with a group with my sister at her college, the University of Dallas. I played 4 years on Texas A&M’s club team, culminating with captaining the team and going to our first year at College Nationals in Washington my senior year. While in college and continuing on till 2011, I played with various club teams. I’ve spent countless weekends driving 7 hours roundtrip for 12 hours of practice in 112 degree weather, weekday workouts and practices up to 4 days a week, flew to countless cities for tournaments all over the US, places like Chicago, Boston, Denver, Colorado Springs, Fayetteville, Baton Rouge, Austin, Dallas, Houston, College Station, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Jacksonville, San Jose, and who knows where else. I’ve been to Club Nationals in Sarasota Florida 5 or 6 times, honestly it kind of all runs together now. I’ve even played internationally, twice at a beach tournament in Rimini Italy as a guest on a British team (one of which we won the tournament!) and most recently for Worlds in Prague in 2011. It’s one of my favorite things to do, and one of the accomplishments I am most proud of. I love the sport for many reasons, sure the spirit of the game is great (look up the rules if you’re not familiar with the sport, it is self officiated even at high levels of competition) but mostly I love the chance to work hard and excel as an individual and as a team, and of course the friends I’ve made. In most areas of my life I don’t like showing off, but somehow I love making an awesome catch, dive, or throw and seeing the surprise, sometimes even disbelief, on the faces of onlookers or better yet, the competition. I haven’t played in almost 3 years due to the whole pregnant and having babies phase of my life, which I would never give up of course, but some days I just miss playing.
But yes, this is a design blog, I’m getting there… Most tournaments will have a frisbee they sell with the logo, name, date, etc on the disc, kind of like buying a tournament tshirt. Then some teams have their own discs too. Well the team I played with for my last 5 years never made a disc (maybe they have now, but at the time they hadn’t), so mark made me one to hang on the wall! It’s just a sticker, not really printed on the disc, but I still love it!
He based it off the first jersey the team had, which a friend and I designed. Of all the jerseys I’ve worn, this one is still my favorite. I love the view of the showdown through the cowboys legs on the front, and the old west town on the back.
One of the years he designed our jerseys and also made this logo for us:
And then we made iron on tshirt a for ourselves one year just for fun:
Good luck to my friends on Showdown as you head towards the end of the season, I know you have been working hard, and although I’m sad to not be a part anymore, I’ll be there to cheer you on at Nationals this year!
